Cecile "Granny Sig" Thomason

Cecile “Granny Sig” Thomason, 87, of West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma, was called to her heavenly home on March 17, 2026, in Kansas, Oklahoma, surrounded in love by her two daughters. A proud Cherokee citizen, Sig was born in the community of Row, near Colcord, and graduated from Colcord High School in 1957. While in school, she met her future husband, John Oliver “J.O.,” and they were married on August 1, 1957, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As J.O. was in the Army, they moved to El Paso for a time when he was stationed there. After the Army, they found themselves in Alaska amongst several of their kin. While the men worked construction, the women worked side jobs and watched the children. While there, the memories most cherished are the hunting/fishing and foraging for berries. Eventually, all of them found their way back to Oklahoma, and Sig and J.O. began to plant their family roots in the community that raised them. Johnita, their second daughter, was born the same year they built a house that would be their home until the day they passed. At that house, Sig raised her two daughters, their friends, and eventually grandchildren and great nieces and nephews, both of blood and of the heart. Sig was well known to be welcoming and inclusive to all, loving them “as Jesus would”. Sig was everyone’s extra Momma and Granny, and she prayed for them all just the same. Eventually, Sig went to Cosmetology school to receive a beautician's license. She then opened and operated a small shop out of their home for several decades. As a secondary income, Sig sold Avon to her surrounding community, bringing style, class, and beauty to every doorstep. In 1973, after obtaining her master cosmetology instructor license, she began teaching Cosmetology at Colcord High School for nearly 27 years. There are not many beauticians, barbers, and salon owners in the Northeast Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas area that can’t trace their professional lineage to a one, “Mrs. Thomason”. This glamorous side of Sig contrasted highly with some of her favorite activities and hobbies. Fishing, camping, foraging, gardening, thrifting, or just “going for a drive” were her favorite things to do, complete with a snack bag of course! Roll your eyes all you want, but several family members were fed, clothes provided, and their homes furnished/ decorated with all her “finds”, both the “found in the wild” and the “slightly used” domesticated ones. Sig was one of the first to call to congratulate you on your accomplishments or offer comfort and friendship during difficult times. She loved to make people laugh, and her quick wit has caused more than a few occasions of giggles, including her own. Her love for community organization and engagement, whether it was a benefit fundraiser or a candidate dinner for people to be informed, was well known and respected in Delaware County. Sig is preceded in death by her husband, J.O. Thomason, her son-in-law, Johnny Stonecipher, her mother and father, Dollie and Henderson King, four sisters- Irene Kirby, Lois Spencer, Juanita Riley, and Doris Ramsey, two brothers, George and Carl“Cooney” King, and several beloved nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Sig is survived by her two daughters, Sherri Thomason of West Siloam Springs, OK and Johnita Stonecipher of Kansas, OK, two granddaughters and their partners, Ceciley “Ceci” Thomason- Murphy and Jacob Murphy of Okmulgee, OK and Jazmyn Stonecipher and Trey Snell of Tahlequah, OK; her sister Dorothy Stubblefield of Siloam Springs, AR, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, dear friends, and her dog, Sophie. Cecile’s memorial service will be held on her birthday, April 7, 2026, at 10 am at Wasson’s Funeral Home in Siloam Springs, AR. The family is requesting people wear bright colors to celebrate Spring and brown lipstick, Sig’s favorite shade. Lipstick optional for the men. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that people choose one of the options that work for them: - A plant that be put into the ground - A donation to The Manna Center in Siloam Springs, Sig’s favorite thrift store - A donation to the scholarship fund made in her honor to help students who attend trade schools. Burial will be a private ceremony at a later date.
